Light up your winter in the science Centre. Enjoy an array of hands-on activities, luminous live shows, magical light play and real life experiments. Be wowed by Gaia – a great, glowing replica of planet Earth and explore the Play Zone for under-7s.

Here’s just a snapshot of what you can enjoy, with full details below!

  • Lumiere live show: Explore things that sparkle and glow in this beautiful live show.
  • Magical Light Play in the Making Studios: Experiment with magical creations that capture and project light.
  • Experiment Zone: Extract DNA from the humble festive sprout.
  • Lantern trail: Follow our glowing lantern trail around the centre and see how many you can find.
  • Space Zone: Launch your own rocket; be the boss in Mission Control and check out how astronauts poo in space. Explore the planets and night skies in the North’s biggest planetarium and see our Earth in whole new light with the stunning digital globe Sphere.
  • Gaia created by British artist Luke Jerram: It’s wowed audiences across the globe and now you can wonder at this mesmerising and massive recreation of planet Earth.
  • LEGO® creations built by pro LEGO® artists: Be inspired to get building! Highlights include a 1.5m model of The LEGO Movie’s Space UniKitty and a steampunk submarine– the handiwork of Warren Elsmore – and Stephenson's Rocket locomotive, by local artist Steve Mayes.
