Role:
Group support

My name is Adrianna, I study psychology and I decided to volunteer for FANE (Friend Action North East) recently!

The aim of FANE is to help people with learning disabilities or autism spectrum disorder to improve their social skills and find friends. A special training is provided for all volunteers. During the training volunteers are taught about health and safety rules and also they are given many different options how to help people with learning disabilities or autism spectrum disorder. The position available for volunteers include:

  • Friendship Mentor (a role for a person who could support someone with learning disabilities or autism spectrum disorder by for example supporting in developing friendship skills),
  • Digital Volunteers (a role for a person who could support all aspects of IT such as campaigning for digital inclusion for people with learning disabilities and/or autism),
  • Group Support (a role for a person who could encourage people to become more independent and help them to develop group skills. There are many existing groups such as an Arts Group or a Film Group),
  • Digital Inclusion Adviser (a role for a person who could teach people with learning disabilities or autism spectrum disorder how to use social media to make them less isolated and more social),
  • Senior Friendship Mentor (a role for a person who could give one to one support and help to develop friendship and practice skills).

I was especially interested in Group Support. My group is meeting every Tuesday to play pool. The great thing about pool is that everyone can come and play, people do not need any special abilities or trainings. Although I haven’t started yet I’m really excited about it. I believe working for FANE will let me see things from different perspectives and help me to understand struggles people with learning disabilities or autism spectrum disorder better. As a student of psychology I also get essential for my future job experience how to interact with different type of people. Volunteering for FANE is really satisfactory as you can actually make a change in someone’s life!
