The park is situated in the East of the City. When the park was first laid out in 1888 the township of Walker was a very different place from what it is today. Walker was an industrial area with collieries, ship yards and a chemical industry situated along the banks of the Tyne. 

Many of the original features have been lost including the monument, lake, bandstand and original pavilion. The park saw a period of stagnation during the 1960s, 70s and 80s, when the traditional industries were in decline. Newcastle City council are currently working with the Heritage Lottery Fund in order to develop a stage 2 funding application. If successful the park will under go a major historical restoration.
