Some useful information about Personal Independence Payments (PIP)

PIP is to help people meet the extra costs that come from having a long-term health condition or disability.

Making a claim to PIP​: To make a claim, phone the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) new claims line: 0800 917 2222.

Existing DLA claimants: If you are currently entitled to Disability Living Allowance, DWP will invite you to claim PIP at some point from October 2013, but most people won’t be affected before October 2015.

How will people claiming DLA be affected by PIP? Most Disability Living Allowance (DLA) claimants won’t be affected by until at least October 2015.But there are some exceptions.From 28 October 2013, if you live in Wales, West Midlands, East Midlands or East Anglia, the Department for Work and Pensions will invite you to claim Personal Independence Payment (PIP):

  • if they get information that there’s been a change in your care or mobility needs;
  • when your DLA award ends; or
  • on or shortly after your sixteenth birthday, if you turn 16 on or after 7 October 2013.

You can also choose to claim PIP instead of your DLA if you live in the reassessment area.
