The Climbing Walls

Newcastle Climbing Centre has been designed and constructed by Rockworks, a North East company with over 20 years experience in the installation of the best and largest indoor walls in the U.K. They have created a spectacular design for Newcastle Climbing Centre with over 1200m2 of varied indoor climbing. Whatever your standard of climbing there are features and challenges to suit everyone’s preference with 74 individual climbing lines from 5m in height to 18m in length together with an extensive bouldering area.

Central Zone

The tallest climbing walls rise to the full height of the building and form the centrepiece of the climbing centre, culminating in a spectacular, 8m roof section. This area includes a whole variety of vertical and overhanging profiles with interlinking corners, arêtes and grooves lines. There are 41 roped climbing lines offering 123 individually graded climbs. An abseil platform for instruction and training together with auto belay facilities to six route lines on a rocklike buttress make this area even more exciting and varied.

Intermediate and Instruction Zone

Lower height walls predominate in this area with a total of 34 individual route lines and this is an ideal base for groups and those who wish to build up to the challenges of the central walls. The Climbing walls in this area are highly varied from gentle slabs to bridging corners, stepped overhangs and a fully featured training wall. 17 route lines are equipped for top rope only to a height of 5.5m and 17 route lines to a height of 7m with the option to lead or top rope.

Bouldering Zone

This area is totally dedicated to bouldering with the most cutting edge design for any contemporary facility. The walls include two interlinking arches and a very steep cave area. The multitude of angles and profiles have created a boulderer’s dream with potential for extensive training circuits and technical challenges at all levels.

General Facilities

Newcastle Climbing Centre has been designed and built to the highest standards and we provide excellent facilities for visitors including fully equipped changing rooms and showers, disabled access, meetings room and a comfortably spacious viewing gallery. The on site gear shop is the best in the region offering specialist advice and equipment from all the leading brands including DMM, Wildcountry, Black Diamond, Petzl, Edelrid and Moon. Our friendly chillout area is open to all whether taking a break from the climbing or waiting for friends and family.
