A Roman biographer of Emperor Hadrian wrote that the wall was built ‘to separate Romans from barbarians’. At every Roman mile, there was a mile castle, guarded by at least eight men. Between each mile castle there were two equidistant turrets. The Newcastle Arts Centre occupies the site of a Roman mile castle.

I would recommend that people come here to eat. Why go anywhere else? It's quiet, relaxing, the food was nice - I might even get a pudding yet! (Marc)
when i arrived it was really noisey but when we got to the 3rd floor it was more settled and was better to relax and have my tea :D
The food was nice and they are friendly here. I think its quiet - which i like. (maria)
I go regularly to Wetherspoons and this one is usual standard of reasonable price and choice. Its a bit of a walk from the Haymarket/Eldon Square/Monument though as it is close to Central Station but has Metro station close enough and a few bus routes from the Eldon Square bus station, however, the buses don't go back to Eldon Square the other way which is disappointing.
I thought the mile castle was very spasous. There was a lot more room than you might expect. and I was please to discover that it was wheel chaire accessable. with lift installed as we did have a few staires to climb. Overall I couldn't really falt anything. Good food, good service, it had everything. (Gary)
