Disability Summer Sailing

In partnership with Coquet Shorebase Trust and Able 2 Services, part of the Percy Hedley Foundation, Sport North Tyneside is pleased to offer a sailing experience over the summer.

The sailing is located within the beautiful Druridge Bay Country Park and with access to Ladyburn Lake promises to be an enjoyable day out. Participants will be using two twin access dinghies, two single access dinghies and one catamaran. The access dinghies are suitable for two people or one person depending on which boat is available, the catamaran is suitable for one person and an instructor. The centre has all the relevant insurance & safety equipment to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. Life jackets will be provided for your journey on the boat.

The sailing centre is adjacent to the visitor centre which has a café attached providing hot drinks and food. It would be recommended to bring a packed lunch as you will have some time to rest and enjoy the country park whilst others are out sailing. There is accessible changing and toilet facilities on site. You need to bring waterproof clothing, a change of clothes and wear non slippy shoes (trainers are fine). You must be able to arrange your own transport to and from the sailing centre.

Each participant will spend around 30 minutes out on the lake with the instructors. Whatever your level of experience or water confidence, there is always a way of enjoying getting out on the boat, learning new skills and making friends. The centre has a long tradition of enabling those with a disability to get involved in sailing.

The centre has a hoist that can be used to support wheelchair user’s entry/exit from the boat. The dinghies are accessible to ensure this experience is as inclusive as possible.

The activity is suitable for visual impairment, learning disabilities and physical disabilities for those aged 14 and above. The activity aims to be as inclusive as possible, but participants must be accompanied by a parent or carer for support.
